The Greek gerund

The Greek gerund answers the questions “When?” or “How?” and can be translated closely enough with -ing.

Examples

Έμαθα το λεξιλόγιο φτιάχνοντας προτάσεις. 

(I learned the vocabulary by making sentences.) How?

Γυρίσατε στο σπίτι περπατώντας.

(You returned home on foot) (lit. by walking). How?

Αγόρασα έναν καφέ πηγαίνοντας στη δουλειά.

(I bought a coffee while going to the workplace.) When?

Τους είδα περνώντας μπροστά από το μαγαζί.

(I saw them while passing in front of the shop.) When?

-οντας or -ώντας?

no accent on the “o” sound –> -οντας   

τρέχω (to run) – τρέχοντας

διαβάζω (to read) – διαβάζοντας

λέω (to say) – λέγοντας

with an accent  on the “o” sound –> -ώντας

μιλάω (to speak) – μιλώντας

τραγουδάω (to sing) – τραγουδώντας

μπορώ (to be able to) – μπορώντας

Note:

Gerunds should not be confused with adjectives/ nominized adjectives in -οντας (originally adjectives ending in -ων)

ο μέλλοντας (μέλλων-ουσα-ον) – future, future tense

ο παράγοντας (παράγων-ουσα-ον) – factor

ο άρχοντας (άρχων-ουσα-ον) – ruler, liege

etc
